Birds need a certain amount of grooming and maintenance for their health. For healthy skin and plumage, they need a shower at least once weekly. You can get your bird used to a fine mist handheld shower hose for a few minutes with lukewarm water. To prevent the loss of your bird and discourage flying, keep the wings clipped. Beaks can get overgrown and deformed without regular maintenance. Many items are available at larger pet supply stores to keep the beak in a healthy state, such as lava or mineral blocks. Finally, the nails must be kept trim, which can be accomplished with some concrete type perches, although they can also be kept maintained with bird nail clippers and styptic powder in the event that the nails bleed during the clipping.

A puppy usually starts out with dry foods at about three to four weeks of age. At that time you can mix the dry with some water, which is easier for the puppy, and fed three to four times a day. How much you feed your puppy depends on the breed of the dog and should be followed according to the recommendations on the bag of food. Be sure the puppy food you choose is high in nutrients with proper protein, calcium and calories necessary for your dog. Again, the first ingredient on the label should be meat. By the time your puppy is three to four months old, choose a feeding schedule of twice a day, at breakfast and dinner.

There are several varieties of hamsters although the most common is the Syrian, golden or Teddy Bear hamster. Despite their golden color, the Syrian hamsters can come in a variety of color combinations. These particular hamsters should be kept separate from others as they do tend to fight if you choose to get a pair.

Another variety is less common but much more sociable and is known as the Russian or Chinese dwarf hamsters. These little dwarf hamsters are very similar and are usually brown in color with a black striping on the back. Many say they resemble tailless field mice. These hamsters can actually be found in other color combinations, are pretty friendly and do well in pairs, considering they are both the same sex.

Cats love to scratch and it is part of who they are. You surely don’t want your cat to continue defacing your furniture because of this deep-ingrained need. Cats try to make their presence known and scratching is their visual way of doing so for their humans. Another way is by releasing pheromones, a secretion on their bodies’ that attracts other felines. Either way, scratching the furniture is unacceptable; there are ways you can stop the destruction.

Many people choose to have their indoor cats declawed, which is a safe procedure, especially when your cat is young. This is something to discuss with your veterinarian.

Provide your cat with scratching posts, strategically placed throughout the home where your cat frequents. There should be at least one post per cat living in the home, plus an extra. If you catch your cat scratching the furniture, redirect it to a scratching post. Each scratching post should be tall enough for your cat to stretch to the top and should be stable enough so the feline does not fear it moving.

Some people choose to cover the furniture with heave gage plastic or use repellent aerosols to keep the cats away from scratching the furniture. Other options are keeping your cat’s nails trimmed well and often.

If you are concerned about what to feed your dog, it is recommended that you choose a high-quality dog food with a specified meat as the number one ingredient. Avoid meat by-products, bone meal, corn, wheat or other fillers. The best dog food is grain-free with high protein and high fiber, it may cost a little more but fills your dog up with lesser amounts. It is important to read labels and provide food with the least amount of ingredients.

Dry food is a better option most times as it helps to keep teeth and gums in better health than a wet food. This does not mean that you cannot give wet food now and then or mix it with dry food for variety. Most high-quality dog foods are found at your local pet store and they can help you with a choice to fit your dog’s particular needs.  Your veterinarian can also be able to assist you with a brand of food. Most vets carry dog food products.

As far as how often to feed a dog, it is best to split the recommended amount of food between two feedings a day rather than all at one time. Optimum times are at breakfast time and dinner time with a good chew bone or dental bone prior to bedtime.

Choosing a pet insurance most often depends upon your needs and cost. There are pros and cons to consider in making your decision with the first pro being the option to care for your animal in the face of an emergency. There are a variety of insurance companies, policies and coverage options. Some will cover unexpected medical issues as well as annual checkups and immunizations. Of course, the more coverage you get, the higher the premium. The younger the animal, the lower your premiums will be. If your pet is healthy at the time of signing up for the insurance, you have no problem qualifying for coverage. Some policies will let you choose your own vet and some may not. If you can, you can choose extended care for your pet such as dental care and accidental death.

Cons you might think about are the cost of treatments vs. the cost of insurance. Some insurance policies have maximum benefit amounts so you need to consider that when choosing. It is a con when faced with choosing a vet that you are unsure of. Some policies will not let you use your own doctor. Also consider the fact that some policies require pre-authorization before treatment – which can mean the life of your pet in an emergency. Be leery of the policies that require a physical and do not allow pre-existing conditions such as flea problems, past injuries, chronic ailments and oral hygiene. A select few companies will not cover older pets. Read all the fine print before choosing your policy. Most pet insurance companies require out-of-pocket and deductibles. Make sure there are no penalties for cancelling a policy at any time.

Having a pet insurance policy for your animal can give you peace of mind. If you can afford a policy for the health of your animal, it is a good choice and safety net in the event of an emergency.

Some dogs are prone to ear infections and other conditions. An infection will be noted by the head shaking as well as redness and a foul odor. Prevent moisture accumulation within the ear to keep the ear canals clean and dry in order to avoid ear infections.

Dogs with floppy ears are prone to ear infections because air is not allowed to get in the ear canal. These dogs need special attention. In order to avoid any ear infections and conditions, clean your dog’s ears on a regular basis – weekly for the floppy-eared dog or a dog with constant ear problems and monthly for all other breeds. Special ear cleaners can be found at the larger pet supply stores. Use cotton balls or swabs, but be cautious not to go too deep into the ear canal and cause damage. A homemade solution is equal parts of white vinegar and isopropyl alcohol. This is a great preventative and treatment from an early infection. Please consult your vet before doing anything.
