Heartworm can be a fatal disease for your dog if they are not protected. Although veterinarians recommend prevention year round, during early spring, it is important to get your dog in for a routine blood test to be sure your dog is heartworm negative. Once the results come in, it is simple to begin a preventative plan for your dog. Your veterinarian will prescribe a once-a-month oral medication for your dog such as Interceptor, Sentinel or HeartGard.

Ask your vet about these particular medications as there are some available that work in multiple ways to repel heartworm, fleas and ticks. A topical medication, Revolution, is also available. More recently a vaccine is offered, ProHeart-6, given once every six months to protect your dog against heartworm disease. Either way, testing is recommended annually to manage the disease and protect your pet.

If you choose to advertise your content in the ad, then while designing the ad, the image for that content will automatically become the image for the ad, and you will be able to change that image.

Begin with a good quality canary seed mix along with some pellets, placing a dish of both in the cage. As with other birds, the canary also needs and enjoys a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables such as oranges, apples, bananas, canned corn, green peppers, corn on the cob, raw spinach, collard greens, Swiss chard and dandelion greens. You can also choose cooked broccoli, hard boiled eggs, pears, strawberries, peaches, squash, cucumbers and more. Feed in moderation and vary the fresh foods daily for balanced nutrition. Provide an ample supply of fresh water in the cage daily.

It can vary. However, cats are typically considered geriatric by the age of 7. While people want to think of their cats' ages in terms of human years, cats age more rapidly than humans and that means their "equivalent age" is much different than how long they have been alive in human years.

Here are the calculations that can help put a cat's age in human terms:

    • 7 human years = 45 cat years
    • 10 human years = 58 cat years
    • 15 human years = 75 cat years
    • 20 human years = 98 cat years

Humping is most often considered a sexual action, predominantly in males, but this is not always the case. Female dogs sometimes hump as well and this behavior is also a part of asserting authority. It is a very embarrassing action when guests arrive and your dog humps their leg. The behavior does need to cease. The first action is to have the pet desexed – this helps at least 60 per cent of dogs to stop humping. Sometimes a medication is necessary by reducing libido and stabilizing dominance in the animal. Humping is a natural behavior in dogs and can be prevented with persistence on your part. When in the act, redirect your dog’s attention however you can by saying a firm “no” while pushing him down from whatever he is humping and offer a favorite toy, chew bone or treat. Praise the dog when he stops. Exercise your dog with a walk and/or play time as well to expel pent up energy and frustration.

Any changes in diet should first be discussed with your doctor to be sure there are no health issues. Once assured your cat is healthy, try changing foods to find one your cat prefers. Experiment with varieties to find something your cat will love. If you have been using a dry food, add a little water to make it more appealing. Mix canned and dry together. Warm the regular food to make it more aromatic and enticing. Pour a small amount of olive oil over its food for the same effect or try adding tuna in oil. If your cat eats dry food, leave it out so he can access it whenever he wants. To put on some extra pounds, try offering your cat homogenized milk or a mixture of milk and cream if your cat can tolerate it.

Eating habits and problems may be psychological where you may need to praise and encourage your cat in a soft tone of voice to eat its food. Provide his food in an area away from disturbances and distractions. Because of the finicky habits, changing the foods often may work as well. If you still have concerns, your veterinarian may be able to advise you about a dietary supplement or a high-calorie food specific for cats that need to gain weight. Remember to consult your vet about this. Please remember, even though your cat seems skinny some breeds are naturally thin.

Many pets are fearful of thunder and storms and that includes cats, although it is rare. Even though they do have an independent nature, some felines are startled by the sudden noises. You can help by counter-conditioning your pet. Distract your cat during a storm and do something you know your cat enjoys. Use a lot of praise and treats during this fun time. In extreme cases, your veterinarian can prescribe anti-anxiety medical treatments.

Most importantly, when a storm occurs, keep yourself calm as pets reflect off your feelings many times. If redirecting the cat to other activities during a storm is not working, try to provide a safe place for your get to feel secure. The most popular spots are under the bed, behind furniture or a secret basement location, any place that may muffle the noises it fears. If your cat does not have a “safe haven” chosen, you can provide a safe place by placing some of its favorite toys (with catnip) and some food bits to encourage your cat to go there.

Maybe you have an indoor cat that loves to gaze out the window and you would like to bring it outside to safely enjoy some nature. Some people do choose to walk their cats on a leash. Leash-training your cat is possible, it can take some patience on your part and is an easy task when done at an early age for your feline. It can be fearful for the adult cat so take your time and if the cat is not accepting of a leash, it may not be meant-to-be.

The best option is to use a halter for your cat rather than a collar. The harness should fit well enough so that you can get two fingers under it when on your cat. Along with the harness you will need a nylon lead, six to eight feet in length. A chain lead would be too heavy for your cat.

Begin leash training your cat indoors to get the cat used to wearing the harness and lead. Do not take it outside until your cat is accustomed to it. At this point you can start outside with short trips, about five minutes at a time. Gradually increase your walk times. If you go out and your cat wants to just lie down and take in the sights, don’t force the issue of going for walks. Kitty is just happy to lie down and sight-see.

If you are planning on traveling with your dog, especially by car, there are some tips you need to follow for car safety and pets. First, be sure the dog is safely secured in the car. Car seats are available for the small to medium sized dogs and there are harnesses for the larger dogs, all of which are easily attached to your own car seats.

Wherever you travel, be sure the destination is pet-friendly and never leave your dog unattended in your car. In this same respect, be sure you check out hotels along your route to be sure they welcome canines in their facilities. A little time and effort should go into planning your pet-friendly trip for the fun and safety of your dog as well as yourself.

    The best medications to treat your pet dog or cat are provided through your veterinarian. Many over-the-counter flea and tick treatments are not as effective. Some of the best options are;

    • Program to prevent fleas by preventing flea eggs – it is available in pill and liquid form for cats and tablet form for dogs. Program is most often used in conjunction with Capstar to kill adult fleas – usually within 30 minutes.
    • Advantage is a popular choice to kill and prevent fleas in dogs and the liquid formula is applied topically monthly.
    • Frontline kills and prevents fleas and ticks – and the liquid is also applied topically each month.
    • Revolution – another topical liquid is used to kill fleas while also controlling deer ticks as well as ear mites.
    • Sentinel comes in a once-a-month tablet form to prevent fleas and heartworm disease as well as kill hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.
The products above are not listed as waterproof although that should not apply to pill-form medications. K9Advantix does make topical liquid monthly medications that are indeed waterproof. They are applied once a month. K9Advantix prevents and kills fleas, ticks and the mosquitoes that cause heartworm disease.
Medications for cats differ than those for dogs and must clearly state they are for feline use. Some products used on a dog can be toxic for cats. Aside from the Program and Capstar mentioned above, other products that are safe for your cat include:
    • Advantage for the prevention and control of fleas, a liquid formula applied topically once a month.
    • Frontline Top Spot, a topical liquid used monthly to prevent and kill fleas and ticks. Frontline Plus works in much the same way but is also waterproof.
    • Revolution prevents heartworm disease while controlling roundworms, ear mites and hookworm as well as killing fleas.
