Part 1: Common Dog Diseases and their Symptoms

Common Dog Diseases and their symptomsYou can keep your dog healthy by keeping yourself informed about the different dog illnesses and their symptoms. Knowing the warning signs of dog diseases can help you identify them quickly so that treatment can be sought as soon as possible.

Here are common dog diseases and their symptoms:

  • Allergic Dermatitis – Your dog may be scratching and licking more than they usually do. You may also notice that their skin is flaky or irritated. There are tests that your veterinarian can do to identify the reason for the irritation and medications that are available to treat allergic dermatitis. This is a condition that can appear at any time during a dog’s life.

  • Arthritis and Joint Pain – Arthritis is abnormal changes in your dog’s joints. It occurs when cartilage wears away faster than it is replaced. You may notice your dog limping due to the pain in the joints and reduced mobility.

  • Cancer in Dogs – Dogs are a lot like people in many ways, including the fact they can get cancer. Your veterinarian will perform a range of tests to diagnose cancer and determine the best course of treatment. You may notice that there is an issue if your dog experiences rapid or extreme weight loss, abnormal swelling that grows, persistent sores, an offense odor, difficulty eating or swallowing, major changes in appetite, or lack of interest in things he or she normally likes.

  • Dental Diseases in Dogs – If your dog has extremely bad breath, then you know that there is something going on with your dog’s oral health. You may even notice some plaque on your dog’s teeth. This can be rectified through different treatments and simply making sure your dog’s mouth is healthy.

  • Diabetes in Dogs – If your dog is excessively thirsty, weak, urines often, loses weight very fast, is depressed, or has pain in the abdominal area, then your dog may have diabetes. Diabetes is treatable in dogs just as it is in humans.

  • Food Intolerance and Food Allergies in Dogs – Dogs can develop food allergies and intolerances at any time during their lives. You may notice your dog vomiting or having stomach aches. They may also have diarrhea, gas, inflamed skin, chronic ear problems, wheezing and coughing, or poor growth. Diet changes can solve the issue.

  • Heart Disease in Dogs – Unusual pulses, lack of energy, collapsing, reduced ability to exercise, abdominal swelling, and reduced appetite are some of the symptoms of heart disease in dogs.

  • Kidney Disease in Dogs – Decreased appetite, bad breath, weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting, increased urine production and thirst, weakness, lack of energy, dull coat, sore mouth, and depression are symptoms of kidney disease. The food your dog eats and a number of other elements will be considered by your vet when treating kidney disease.

If you see any of the symptoms of the above conditions, it is very important that you take your dog to the vet as soon as possible. The sooner you intervene, treatment will be easier for your dog and more affordable for you.
